I wish / Условные предложения с wish

Можно сказать: 'I wish you luck / every success / a happy birthday' etc. :

- I wish you every success in the future.
- I saw Tim before the exam and he wished me luck.

Мы употребляем 'wish somebody something' (luck / a happy birthday etc.). Но нельзя использовать 'wish that something happens'. В этой ситуации нужно строить предложения с hope. Например:

- I hope you get this letter before you go away, (нельзя I wish you get)

Сравните I wish и I hope:

- I wish you a pleasant stay here.
- I hope you have a pleasant stay here, (нельзя I wish you have)

Мы также используем wish чтобы показать свое сожаление о чем-то, это что-то совсем не такое, как нам хотелось бы. Если в этом случае мы используем wish, то глагол ставим в прошедшее время (knew/lived и т.д.), хотя речь идет о настоящем:

- I wish I knew what to do about the problem. (Я не знаю, и я сожалею об этом)
- I wish you didn't have to go so soon. (ты должен идти)
- Do you wish you lived near the sea? (ты не живешь рядом с морем)
- Jack's going on a trip to Mexico soon. I wish I was going too.  (Я не еду)

Чтобы указать на то, что мы сожалеем о чем-то в прошлом, мы используем wish + had ... (had known / had said) и т.д. :

- I wish I'd known about the party. I would have gone if I'd known. (Я не знал)
- It was a stupid thing to say. I wish I hadn't said it.  (Я сказал это)

I wish I could (do something) = Я сожалею, что не могу сделать это:

- I'm sorry I have to go. I wish I could stay longer. (но не могу)
- I've met that man before. I wish I could remember his name. (но не могу вспомнить)

I wish I could have (done something) = Я сожалею, что не мог сделать это:

- I hear the party was great. I wish I could have gone.  (но я не мог пойти)

Можно сказать I wish (somebody) would (do something)'. Например:

It's been raining all day. Jill doesn't like it.
She says: I wish it would stop raining.

Джил хотела бы, чтобы дождь прекратился, но это скорее всего не случится.
Мы используем I wish ... would когда хотим, чтобы что-то случилось или изменилось. Обычно говорящий не ожидает, что это произойдет.

Мы часто используем I wish ... would чтобы пожаловаться на ситуацию:

- The phone has been ringing for five minutes. I wish somebody would answer it.
- I wish you would do something instead of just sitting and doing nothing.

Можно использовать I wish ... wouldn't ... чтобы пожаловаться на действия, которые люди делают регулярно:

- I wish you wouldn't keep interrupting me.

Мы используем I wish ... would ... для изменяющихся действий, не для ситуаций. Сравните:

- I wish Sarah would come.  (= Я хочу, чтобы она пришла)

Но:     - I wish Sarah was (или were) here now. (нельзя I wish Sarah would be)

- I wish somebody would buy me a car.

Но:     - I wish I had a car. (нельзя I wish I would have)
